Fort Washington is a Continental Army fortification at the northern end of New York Island on the highest point of the island.

General George Washington orders the fort abandoned in the face of the British advance but Colonel Robert Magaw refuses and holds fast. The British Army successfully assaults the fort and captures it, before attacking Fort Lee across the river in New Jersey, capturing it as well. While traveling to Fort Lee, General Charles Scott and Captain Benjamin Tallmadge encounter fleeing Continentals, who inform them of the forts' fall.[1]
