Mary Woodhull is the wife of Culper Ring spy and farmer Abraham Woodhull.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Mary was engaged to Thomas Woodhull, sometime before his death in 1773. After his death, Mary married Thomas' brother, Abraham. The two eventually had a son, whom they named in Thomas' honor.
American Revolutionary War[]
In the autumn of 1776 in Setauket, Long Island, at her farmhouse, Mary listened to Abe speculates to her that the war would be over by Christmas.
Later, Abe encountered Charles Joyce and John Graves Simcoe, after he defended Selah Strong against them due to an argument that Selah had with John Robeson. After Selah and Abe were held for the bar brawl that ensued, Richard Woodhull, Abe's father, convinced Edmund Hewlett to let Abe go. When Abe returned to the Woodhull farm, Mary asked him why he would even go to Strong Tavern. Richard then warned Abe to stay away from people like the Strongs and Tallmadges.

Season 1[]
- "Young in features but middle-aged in temperament, Mary comes from a Tory family based out of Suffolk County. Originally, she was betrothed to marry Abe’s brother Thomas, but he died soon after their first and only meeting. A new arrangement was proposed by Richard Woodhull and after some careful coaxing, Abe married her in his brother’s stead. Her life revolves around Abe and their son, Thomas. She counts on Abe to provide for and protect them."

- "Mary’s life revolves around her family, relying on Abe to provide and protect for her and their son, Thomas. In season one, she felt her husband pulling further and further away from her and believed his attention was focused on Anna Strong. Mary realized the truth was far more dangerous when she discovered Abe’s hidden codebook and pistol. While confronting Abe with her discovery, their argument was overheard by Baker, the Redcoat who lived with them and a man whom Mary regarded highly. When Abe was forced to kill Baker, Mary showed that she is no wilting flower and calmly plotted out a plan to cover up the murder. After burning down their house and blaming it, along with Baker’s death, on the patriots, Abe and Mary are forced to move back in with Abe’s father, something Mary had wanted all along. Knowing the truth about Abe, Mary now holds a major chip in the game."

Having been raised a Tory, Mary spends the better part of the first season trying to stop her husband from spying for the Patriot cause. But she realizes she can't change Abe, so Mary devotes herself to helping him avoid detection and stay alive. By the end of the second season, it is Mary who masterminds Abe's plan to kill the courier to Major André and intercept the message that will expose Abe as a spy. In Season Three, Mary finds that supporting her husband not only puts her son Thomas in jeopardy, but herself as well. But Mary is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep their family intact, rising to levels of courage and daring she never knew she possessed."
